Pokémon Legends: Z-A Is Coming — Here's What to Expect

The Pokémon Company surprised fans worldwide when it announced Pokémon Legends: Z-A during the February 2024 Pokémon Day Presents. As the follow-up to the beloved Pokémon Legends: Arceus, this new title is set entirely in the city of Lumiose City from the Kalos region — and it's generating enormous excitement. Here's everything confirmed so far.

The Setting: Lumiose City Redevelopment

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in Lumiose City, the sprawling, Paris-inspired metropolis first seen in Pokémon X and Y (2013). The game centres around an "urban redevelopment plan" aimed at making Lumiose City a place where humans and Pokémon can live together in harmony.

The teaser trailer showed both a past version of Lumiose City alongside what appears to be a more modern or rebuilt version, hinting that time travel or parallel timelines — a recurring theme in the Legends series — may play a role in the story.

The "Z" Connection — What Does It Mean?

Fans have long speculated about a Pokémon Z game following X and Y, which teased the legendary Pokémon Zygarde — a Dragon/Ground-type Pokémon that appeared in multiple forms throughout the anime. The "Z-A" title strongly implies Zygarde will play a central role, possibly in a new or expanded form not seen in previous games.

Zygarde's forms include:

  • 10% Forme — Dog-like, quick and aggressive
  • 50% Forme — Serpentine, the most commonly seen
  • Complete Forme — A massive bipedal form with extraordinary power, requiring 100% of its cells

The "A" in Z-A may also allude to Mega Evolution, which was introduced in Kalos in X and Y. Many fans hope Legends: Z-A will restore or reinvent the Mega Evolution mechanic.

What We Can Expect From Gameplay

Based on what was shown in the initial reveal and the Legends: Arceus blueprint, here's what players are anticipating:

  • Action-RPG combat — Like Legends: Arceus, expect real-time Pokémon catching and more dynamic battles rather than purely turn-based encounters.
  • Urban exploration — Navigating Lumiose City's streets, districts, and rooftops could offer a very different feel from the wilderness-focused Arceus.
  • Kalos Pokémon — This will likely be the largest and most detailed appearance of Kalos-native Pokémon since X and Y.
  • Mega Evolution return — Strongly hinted at by the Z-A branding and Kalos setting. Mega Evolution originated in Kalos.

Confirmed Release Window

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is confirmed for release in 2025, targeting both the Nintendo Switch and (likely) the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. An exact release date has not been announced at the time of writing.

Why Fans Are So Excited

The Kalos region holds a special place in many fans' hearts — X and Y marked the franchise's transition to full 3D graphics and introduced Mega Evolution, one of the most popular battle mechanics ever. The region has been largely untouched for over a decade, with no remakes or revisits. Legends: Z-A represents the long-awaited return to Kalos, and if it expands on the strong foundation Legends: Arceus built, it could be one of the most significant Pokémon releases in years.
